Meet The Coach
'Coach Jon' Rummels began his coaching career in 1993 at Springfield Lanphier High School in Springfield Illinois. He was the sprint coach at Lanphier for 15 seasons. During his tenure, the sprinters set school records in the 100 meters, 200 meters, 400 meters, 300 intermediate hurdles, 4x100 relay, and 4x200 relay. The team also had multiple state champions and set a state record in the indoor 4x200 relay.
Coach Jon arrived in Minneapolis in 2008 and started training athletes with Coach Up. His area of expertise included speed, endurance, power and explosion. He worked with athletes not only competing in track and field, but also football, soccer, hockey, basketball and volleyball. In 2017 he began working with the Minnesota Flyers Track and Field Team as their sprint coach. Since he started working with the flyers, they have had a USA Track and Field All American sprinter every season, including a national champion.
Coach Jon's focus when training athletes is to take them through phases. The first one focuses on preparing the athlete's body to stand the stress that comes with sprinting. He then to proceeds with a series of drills and workouts to build an athlete who will end feeling light as a feather and very strong at the same time. His training has produced dozens of high school state champions, several youth and high school All Americans, not to mention Olympic athletes including a gold medalist.
